CREATIVE COMPUTER NOOKS FOR KIDS
By Annette Ledesma

Kids are using computers more than ever! We all agree that the internet is a wonderful research tool for kids in this day and age but we must consider their safety first and foremost. It is for that reason that we suggest you select your computer space strategically.

A common area is the best place for all members of the household to locate a computer. This will allow you to monitor your child’s computer use-both subject matter and time. Size of the space should accommodate any books, paper work and tools that are needed to complete any given task. Be sure to allot a time of day when distractions are at a minimum and the television is turned off. Another important consideration is the lighting of the space. Proper task lighting is will illuminate the space without putting any glare onto your monitor.

A good rule of thumb is to take your senses into consideration. A comfortable temperature, a quiet time and proper lighting will bring the best results in your child’s education.

PLACEMENT OF ACCESSORIES
By Annette Ledesma, Designer Showcase

Accessories are equally as important to your interior as all of the other elements of the room. They are the personal touches that show your style and taste. Whether they are a collection of items that you have gathered over the years, gifts or keepsakes from loved ones, or a recent find, the way you place them in the room is the key to showing them. You decide whether they will be a focal point or simply embellishment complementing the other items in the room.

When placing accessories, balance is most important. There are two types of balance.

  • Symmetry, which denotes a mirror image of one side to the other. Many feel that this type of balance offers formality and use it frequently in formal areas of the home. Putting identical candleholders on each side of a mantle is a good example as well as placing matching sconces on each side of a mirror or artwork.

  • The other type of balance is called asymmetry or bisymmetry. Some people find this type of balance more interesting because none of the items used need be the same. You are using visual balance. A grouping of three small items can balance visually with one large one. This can be especially useful when decorating wall units or shelving. Place visually heavy items low so as not to appear top heavy. Vary sizes and colors of framed pictures, boxes and other accessories using visual balance. Fill with silk greenery or floral arrangements for texture and color.

You may like accessories that are large and substantial featuring classical styles and old world crackle finishes. Perhaps you like animal prints and natural materials. You may like bold color, contemporary styles, abstract or geometric lines.

Wherever your taste lies make sure that you use accessories to show your good taste in the finishing touches.
